Oily Skin
More Information
What is Oily Skin?
Is there anything more that is more annoying than having oily skin?
You keep on looking like a greasy frying pan the entire day; you have your pores so big that it clogs all the dirt and impurities, which causes pimples.
Whether you are in a desperate attempt to get rid of the access oil from your skin because your face tends to be shiny always or because all the access oil is clogging your pores, causing pimples. It can be because, often, oily skin is inherited or the result of your hormones. But unfortunately, you have absolutely no control over your genetics, and often, you can not do much about all the hormonal changes in your body either. You can, however, take control over how you maintain and take care of your skin. Very minimal changes can reduce the amount of oil on your skin and give you a healthier complexion.
What are the Signs of Oily Skin?
You might already know that you have oily skin just because your face keeps on shining all day long. But just in case you are still not fully sure about it and need some further assistance around it, here are a few symptoms that you should look out for:
- Your skin is shiny all day.
- You have big pores.
- Your skin breaks out often, and you also have whiteheads and blackheads.
What Causes an Oily Skin?
When you have active sebaceous glands, it is when you have oily skin. Sebum is the skin’s natural moisturizer that keeps it healthy and nourished. It is exactly what keeps your skin naturally smooth and hydrated, and this is the only reason why your skin ages in due course. Sebum is a good thing; it is only when your skin starts producing way more than it needs that problems start. Your hormones and genetics play a big role in deciding how your glands should work.
Basically, it’s the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that controls the active production of sebum, but its levels are genetically determined. One has not much say on it, and that is why you have to put up with all that excess oil. These DHT levels also become higher in numbers during your puberty and menopause; this is the reason that makes oily skin worse during your high school years and late 50s.
How to Take Care of Oily Skin?
- Choose A Low pH Foaming Cleanser
Stop using those harsh chemical cleansers and join hands with a gentle foaming cleanser that removes most of the excess oil but still leaves some behind, so skin won’t be tempted to produce too much oil again too soon. Try using a Cleansing balm with matcha green tea by Earth Rhythm. It reduces the oil secretion and, exfoliates and eliminates dead skin cells, then rejuvenates the underlying skin to improve your complexion.
- Use a Toner Religiously
Always make it a policy to use a toner with anti-ageing or anti-acne ingredients. Anything with antioxidants or niacinamide fits the bill. For example, try using a Pore away tonique by Earth Rhythm. It actively energizes and refreshes your skin instantly and is packed with powerful skin ingredients like Niacinamide, Vitamin C, Ceramides and Licorice Extract.
- Exfoliate your skin to unclog those pores
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead and dull skin cells from the outer layer of your skin. This can make your skin look healthier and smoother. The process of exfoliation also helps in fighting two common problems of oily skin: clogged pores and enlarged pores. Always look for a chemical exfoliant that's specifically designed for oily types of skin. For example, try using an Exfoliating face cleanser with AHA and BHA by Earth Rhythm. It makes your skin look younger by loosening and dulling build-up on its surface.
- Use an Oil-Free Moisturizer
Let’s face it; most moisturizers don’t work for you. They’re way too heavy and greasy and turn your face into a shiny war zone. Instead, opt for oil-free moisturizers. They contain emollients, i.e. ingredients that behave like oils: they lock in moisture into your skin BUT without adding more oil. For example, try your hands at the Phyto clear oil-free moisturizer by Earth Rhythm. It contains “Madecassoside” which boosts antioxidant activity at the site of wounds, strengthening the skin and increasing blood circulation. It also has been shown to have a rich source of amino acids and is a good hydrating ingredient to soothe upset or compromised skin.
- Wear Sunscreen
It is an added super greasy layer, but it is a must-have; you need to protect your skin from UV rays. Sunscreen is never optional; it is a necessity. The best non-greasy option you have readily available is the Daily defence hybrid sun fluid with SPF 30 by Earth Rhythm. It has a soft, dry, water-resistant finish. The formulation includes mineral and chemical filters encapsulated for long-lasting protection against UVA and UVB rays.
- Use Oil-Free and Water-Based Products
No one wants added oil to anyways oily skin, so look for skincare products that have an "oil-free" label. Try your hands at the products from the oil-free range at Earth Rhythm. They are lightweight and can help you combat oily skin problems.
